The series of sketches and paintings which I’ve made as a follow up on the ‘Breakwaters’ in Walcheren have developed into several pieces of fine art; ‘the monument for Sadrach, Mesach and Abednego’ is one of those pieces. It’s 3D sequel is ‘the monument for three rebels’
The three poles, which you see in both pieces, refer not only to the breakwaters but are also a symbol of the three Jewish men who refused to kneel for the dictator Nebuchadnezzar. At the same time they represent all the people who stand up to the all dictators in our modern age.
One of the stories in the book of Daniel tells us about their constancy, constancy that might even cost their lives. I envy their strength, where do they pluck up the courage? Their strength is in their inner believe, invisible, just like the concrete substructure of the breakwaters which is hidden underneath the surface of the sea. Nevertheless without this invisible substructure such heroic rebellion would be unthinkable.
